Behavioural Economics & Biosecurity: Nudgeathon 2024
Abstract
Nudgeathon is a Queensland University of Technology (QUT) behavioural economics case competition in which student teams develop solutions to complex real-life social issues.
Each year QUT invites teams of undergrad and postgrad students, government, and private sector graduate participants from across Australia, New Zealand, and the World to join us for an incredible two-and-a-half-day Nudgeathon event. Teams of 4 participants deep dive into a “real world” problem brief, using behavioural economics, applied psychology, and social marketing principles and theories to present innovative solutions in front of a panel of expert judges from academia, government, and industry. On the third day, we announce the winners of the competition with these proposals in time being presented to the relevant government department officials (and even Ministers) with the aim of making it a practical reality either at the Commonwealth or State level.
Nudgeathon 2024 was sponsored by the Plant Biosecurity Research Initiative (PBRI) and Wine Australia, as well as 10 other industry and policy stakeholder groups: The Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation, Cotton RDC, Grain RDC, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries, Hort Innovation, VineHealth Australia, Sugar Research Australia, AUSVEG, Australian Banana Growers Council, and CV Hydro.
Teams addressed one of two behavioural challenges, 1. Nudging increased farmgate preparedness, or. 2. Nudging greater identification and reporting by citizen science. To view all of the 20 teams solution presentations, please follow the link:
