Worse Than You Think: Quantile Analysis of Gender Differences in Work Related Depression-Anxiety

Abstract

Depression is the third leading cause of disability. The influential job-demand-control literature finds a strong relationship between the demands of the job, autonomy, and negative health outcomes such as depression. More recent work has expanded causal factors to include (manager) support and job security. The impacts of these working conditions cost economies billions of dollars a year. We conjecture that the marginal effects of working conditions are likely to be larger for those already suffering from depression and this is confirmed by our quantile analysis: effects can be 50%-300% larger than estimates at the mean. We also find significant gender differences with women being more affected by workloads. Introducing parenting responsibilities has additional significant effects, which vary by gender, but they do not explain the workload gender effects.
