The Impact of Working from Home on the Nature of Work, Well-being and Job Performance
Abstract
Remote work, colloquially referred to as working from home, has been increasing in recent decades with a generally positive reputation in the media. Many previous empirical studies, including randomised controlled trials, suffer from a selection bias in that only companies who think remote work is functional and attractive to employees will participate. The Covid lock-owns in Australia led to a massive increase in remote work and provide something of a natural experiment to consider the impacts of remote work on employees working conditions, performance and well-being. We analyse a unique data set of self reported employee responses of full-time Australian workers from 2021 (Q4) – 2022 (Q4). Remote work was associated with either neutral or deterioration in key working conditions. Performance and well-being have non-monotonic relationships with the number of days of remote work and the impact of remote work is frequently negative. Importantly, part of the negative impact of remote work is related to managerial practices that could be improved.
