Details
Wildlife Disease Risk Analysis (DRA) is a systematic, evidence-based and transparent conservation planning process that can be applied to any situation where disease is a factor threatening wildlife. This workshop is based on the IUCN guidelines and manual and will use case studies to facilitate understanding of the process. This workshop will also include a 1hr guided tour around the Native Species Breeding Programme at Perth Zoo, morning tea and lunch.
08:45 - Arrival to Perth Zoo (20 Labouchere RD South Perth WA 6151, meet at Reception). Workshop location is Seminar Room 2.
09:00 - Introduction to the Workshop
09:05 - Introduction to DRA for Australian conservation translocations & Shark bay bandicoot case study - Rebecca Vaughan-Higgins
10:20 - Case examples: Dirk Hartog project and rodents – Fiona Knox
10:45 - Case examples: Platypus DRA – Jess Whinfield
11:00 - Coffee / Tea & light snack
11:20 - DRA – Steve Unwin
12:15 - Questions and answers
12:30 - Lunch
13:15 - Workshop break into small groups and work through the Western ground parrot DRA
Explanation of Real Translocation Scenario (15 mins)
We will outline the scenario including the translocation pathway, with
sufficient information for your group to carry out a DRA on an infectious hazard in each scenario.
13:30 - We will break into 3 groups to first identify
Group 1 – DRA question, goal, scope, focus, assumptions and limitations?
Group 2 – Who are the stakeholders, how will the risk be communicated?
Group 3 – What are the populations of interest, risk appetite for the translocation, sources of information?
13:50 - Discussion of findings – 5 mins per group
14:05 - Each group will carry out a DRA for a specific, selected hazard:
During the group work, you will be putting together the disease risk analysis for one selected hazard, including
(i) justification of hazard (source, destination, transport, carrier, host-immunodeficiency, or population),
(ii) release assessment,
(iii) exposure assessment,
(iv) consequence assessment,
(v) disease risk management - risk evaluation and options, and (vi) risk communication.
Group 1 - Psittacine beak and feather disease virus
Group 2 - Chlamydia
Group 3 - Aspergillosis
15:00 - Each group will discuss their findings for 10 mins
15:30 - Tour of Native Species Breeding Programme
16:30 - Finish
