ISE Congress 2026 Abstract

THE OGIEK INDIGENOUS AND LOCAL KNOWLEDGE ON MEDICINAL PLANTS.
The ogiek an indigenous community primarily living in kenya mau forest and parts of mount Elgon posses rich ethnobotanical knowledge especially in the use of medicinal plants. their practice are rooted in close,long-term interaction with forest ecosystems and passed down orally through generations of herbalists and elders.The ogiek rely on the forest for nearly all their traditional medicines. they can identify plants by leaf shape,bark texture,smell and taste, habitat and seasonality.Our knowledge allows us to treat ailments without external pharmaceutical systems.

COMMON MEDICINAL PLANTS.
Warburgia ugandensis.
- Treats stomach ache,malaria,colds, chest infections.
Olea africana.
- Antiseptic for wounds.
The Ogiek people possess deep knowledge of medicinal plants.
Plant-based remedies involve the use of tree barks, roots, leaves and resins to treat wounds, infections, digestive issues and respiratory problems.
They have botanical expertise – the knowledge of which plants are safe, poisonous or spiritually significant.
Ogiek have got knowledge on understanding how to prepare dosages and combinations.
The transmission of knowledge is passed orally from elders to youths through practice and storytelling.
The honey is another medicine that heals different problems in digestive system. when one hails from a certain disease the community herbalists uses honey to treat. also for one to vomit the ogiek people normally prepares for honey soup that makes someone vomit so much.

There are also plants leaves that are medicinal. we normally take the leaves of such plants and prepare them for consumption. also there are barks of trees that are chewed and acts as a medicine for tooth ache. others when chewed it cures malaria and joints of legs that really helps in marathons of running that quickens someone. some medicinal plants are boiled strongly and taken as a drink which leads to curing someone immediately.

Biography

HE IS A LAWYER AND AN ACTIVIST ADVOCATING FOR THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS COMMUNITIES LIVING IN KENYA AND EAST AFRICA. A YOUNG OGIEK FROM NAROK COUNTY OLOKUSEROI VILLAGE. BORN AND RAISED IN NAROK COUNTY. CURRENTLY I AM FIGHTING FOR OGIEK PEOPLE HAVING WON A CASE IN AFRICAN COURT BASED IN ARUSHA TANZANIA.
