ISE Congress 2026 Abstract
This presentation shares a collaborative project on Yirrganydji Country that brought together Traditional Custodians, airport land managers and university researchers to better understand the social, economic, and environmental importance of mangrove ecosystems. Combining Yirrganydji knowledge of Country with scientific approaches to blue carbon assessment, the project investigated the role of mangroves in capturing and storing carbon, as well as supporting climate resilience, biodiversity and community wellbeing. The work generated new information about tropical mangrove carbon sequestration while creating opportunities for two-way learning, capability building and ongoing stewardship. The project demonstrates how respectful partnerships can strengthen both environmental outcomes and connections between people, place and knowledge.
