Mangroves on social media – What are people saying?

ISE Congress 2026 Abstract

Social media use has been on the rise and it is now a prominent means for fundraising activities and spreading awareness for nature conservation and restoration. Significant gaps remain in our understanding of the complex interplay between social media and human-nature relationships, including for mangrove ecosystems. We analyzed all mangroves tweets between 2010 and 2022 (649,495), then conducted a sentiment and topic analysis. The 100 most frequently used bi-grams (2 adjacent words) were listed and subsequently categorised into topics for each year. ‘Ecosystem Services’ (14%), ‘Restoration’ (13%), and ‘Threats’ (11%) were the most prominent tweet topics for the 13-year study period. Conversations around mangrove restoration on Twitter/X emphasize tree-planting initiatives, often overlooking more integrated and holistic approaches. However, mangrove communication had a predominantly positive sentiment for all years analysed. These findings demonstrate the utility of social media data to affordably support the design of awareness campaigns, as well as conservation and restoration efforts by identifying perception gaps and current sentiments.
