KEYNOTE PRESENTATION - Empowering Farmers, Growing PNG Together

ISE Congress 2026 Abstract

Papua New Guinea (PNG) is home to over 80% rural-based populations who depend heavily on subsistence agriculture. Despite fertile lands and abundant biodiversity, smallholder farmers often face barriers to market access, fair pricing, logistics, and sustainable incomes. Wantok Produce Limited was established to bridge these gaps by creating a scalable, inclusive agribusiness model that uplifts local farming communities while delivering premium export-quality produce to international markets. Our initiative, branded under the theme “Empowering Farmers, Growing PNG Together,” focuses on linking rural producers—especially women and youth—to global value chains through training, mechanization, cold storage, and direct market access. The Wantok Farmers Network, a community-based platform under our company, provides affordable memberships and shareholding opportunities, ensuring farmers are not just suppliers, but co-owners and decision-makers in the agribusiness ecosystem. This presentation shares our model's impact across four key pillars: economic empowerment, gender and youth inclusion, climate-smart agriculture, and community ownership. Since its inception, Wantok Produce has supported over 10,000 farmers across multiple provinces, established export pipelines to Australia, New Zealand, China, and the U.S., and pioneered a rural aggregation and cold chain model that reduces post-harvest losses and increases farmer incomes. As we scale operations, the Wantok model offers a blueprint for other developing nations seeking to transform rural agriculture into a driver of inclusive economic growth. Our participation at ISE 2026 aims to engage with policymakers, researchers, agribusiness leaders, and Indigenous communities across the Pacific and beyond to foster partnerships, share lessons, and amplify farmer-led transformation. By putting farmers at the heart of innovation and investment, Wantok Produce envisions a resilient, inclusive future for PNG agriculture—growing prosperity from the ground up.
