90 MINUTE YARNING CIRCLE - Ethical Digital Space for Ethnobiology: Stories of Archives, AI, and Awareness with ADIE
ISE Congress 2026 Abstract
This 90-minute yarning circle will bring insights and ongoing inquiries from thorny themes the ADIE collective (Allying for Diverse and Inclusive Ethnobiologies) has been winnowing, carding, and spinning over the past year of meetings and workshops.
Each of 5 informal 5-minute presentations will bring a question or conundrum related to digital ethnoecology to guide an informed discussion with the group. We will touch on the use of culturally contextual labels for digital archiving; the use of AI in ethnoecology; publishing to prioritize community-of-knowledge-origin access and engagement; disrupting disciplinary, class, regional, and other barriers; and the pros and cons of LandBack strategies that use ethnoecology archives.
Facilitators at this yarning circle will bring forward discussions and learning energy from a one-day workshop held prior to the Congress and contribute to the design and content of a publication (video clips or book form, to be determined) to bring the insights from the crucible of lived experience to a wider audience.

Biography
This session is organized by ADIE, an informal collective
of multi-disciplinary ethnobiologists that started meeting on video calls since 2021 to chew the fat about emergent topics in ethnobiology and ethnoecology such as creative engagement, digital sovereignty, and support systems for students and emerging scholars. We have enjoyed hosting international workshops on these topics within and in parallel to many of the sister ethnobiology meetings.
