Holistic Analysis of a Traditional Aboriginal Medicine to Support Commercial Development
ISE Congress 2026 Abstract
Traditional medicines haver been used by Aboriginal Australians for countless generations. Traditional Knowledge Holders are seeking to commercialise this knowledge and make it available to consumers. In accordance with current regulations directed by the Therapeutic Goods Administration, a method for authentication of the herbal material and quantification of major bioactive compounds has been developed. This method has been applied for analysis of samples collected from different plant parts and at different times of year, as well as comparison of plants grown on Country versus those purchased commercially. The results indicate a substantially different chemical profile in these different samples. The effect of the traditional preparation and administration route has also been examined to ensure the commercial preparation mimics the traditional preparation as closely as possible and that the active compounds can be absorbed when applied topically.
