Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the Tropical Glasshouses at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG)

BGANZ 2025 Abstract

This presentation focuses on the implementation of Integrated Pest Management (IPM) in the tropical glasshouses at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG), emphasizing sustainable strategies to manage plants pests and diseases while minimising chemical use. Key IPM components used in the glasshouses include cultural, physical, chemical and biological controls, and quarantine procedures. The presentation will explore the role of a fantastic volunteer program of “Squishy Vols” who help with manual pest removal and will highlight the extensive use of biological control using predatory insects. Successful IPM in the ANBG tropical glasshouses requires continuous monitoring, staffing, and financial backing for a sustainable and environmentally-friendly approach to plant health management.
