The Ian Potter National Conservatory – Plants and Horticulture

BGANZ 2025 Abstract

The Ian Potter National Conservatory (IPNC), currently under construction at the Australian National Botanic Gardens (ANBG), will offer an immersive rainforest experience through sustainable design and horticultural practices. This presentation will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the planning and plant selection that are key to creating this dynamic tropical ecosystem.
Inspired by Queensland’s wet tropics rainforest, the conservatory’s main exhibit will feature epiphytes as "living chandeliers." This session will explore the careful selection of resilient species suited for the high-canopy environment and the complexities of managing diverse plant species within a single environmental zone.
The Lower Exhibit will showcase two planted zones, a water feature inspired by Christmas Island mangroves, and plant libraries representing regions like Far North Queensland and Kakadu National Park. These plant libraries not only highlight the ANBG’s connection to national parks but also showcase the incredible diversity of plant life found in these vital ecosystems.
This presentation will also address challenges in soil management, pest control, and plant health, and highlight strategies for engaging the public through transient displays and interpretive materials. Ultimately, the IPNC will be a key visitor attraction deepening connections to Australia’s remote natural landscapes.
