Move the bench: using tree risk assessment frameworks to inform tree protection
BGANZ 2025 Abstract
Tree risk management is an essential part of tree collection management, however with increasing occupancy and changing land use in Botanic Gardens, risk ‘management’ can result in wasted resources and unnecessary modification or removal of some of our most valuable assets.
When properly interpreted, tree risk assessment frameworks can become powerful tools to inform the protection of trees and enhance biodiversity and provide invaluable guidance for land use decisions.
Suitable for non-experts, risk managers, and tree lovers alike, this presentation will provide an overview of how international risk management principles are applied to trees, how non-arborists can apply these to tree management and provide case studies of where informed approaches to visitor risk can deliver cost-effective, targeted interventions to protect people, and safeguard trees.
