Preserving Heritage and Horticulture: The Seismic Upgrade of Auckland Domain Winter Garden
BGANZ 2025 Abstract
The seismic upgrade of the Auckland Domain Winter Garden presented a unique challenge: how to meet modern seismic regulations while protecting a living plant collection and preserving the heritage character of the site.
Relocating the Winter Garden’s extensive plant collection was a major task, requiring careful planning and coordination. The project team had to find ways to safeguard both the plants and the historic structures while construction was under way.
Innovative solutions were needed to carry out the seismic strengthening without compromising the architectural integrity of the glasshouses. A collaborative approach involving council teams, heritage professionals, engineers, architects, and horticulturists was essential to the success of the project.
This presentation will share the journey of the upgrade, from initial planning through to completion. It will highlight the lessons learned and offer insights for others working on heritage garden sites where living collections, architecture, and public value all need to be protected.
