The Changing Landscape of Education in Botanic Gardens: Cultivating Well-being through Nature

BGANZ 2025 Abstract

As the understanding of the link between nature and wellbeing grows, botanic gardens are increasingly embracing wellness-focused educational initiatives. Beyond traditional conservation and environmental education, these spaces are evolving into refuges that support mental, emotional, and physical health for diverse audiences. Within this landscape are also significant challenges which cannot be ignored – climate change mis and dis-information, a growing disconnect between children and experience in the natural world, the current economic climate and an increased thirst for meaningful engagement with the quirky side of plant science, are all challenges that we are called to respond to.

This presentation explores how botanic gardens integrate mindfulness programs, therapeutic horticulture, and immersive green spaces to foster well-being. Through case studies, we explore strategies aimed at enhancing accessibility and inclusion—such as culturally responsive wellness practices, sensory-friendly landscapes, and programs tailored to specific community needs. This discussion highlights the role of botanic gardens as holistic spaces for learning, healing, and social connection in an era of growing urbanisation and digital engagement.
