‘Botanic Gardens beyond the Gates’ Wollongong Botanic Gardens' role in creating a Botanic City

BGANZ 2025 Abstract

A presentation on the role and the brand of Botanic Gardens in driving natural areas restoration, and broader urban greening initiatives, including tiny forests, re-wilding / meadows / local native tree trial in streets, city horticulture presentation, school engagement, koala conservation projects, and use of social research in implementing green projects.

Most urbanised landscapes face a canopy loss crisis, and Botanic Gardens can take key leadership roles in creating meaningful connection to nature and add value as a positive voice in urban spaces. The presentation will highlight to the Botanic Garden community the impact the garden has across the entire city as champions of greening our city.

In the last five years, by rebranding and reimagining our messaging beyond the gates, and approaching the problem with a multi-pronged approach, data has shown a 5% increase of canopy. Wollongong has moved from 17% to 23%, but with a way to go aiming for 35% by 3038.

Green cites are healthy cities! Going beyond our gates has proven that by creating meaningful connection and excitement around greening spaces, community can be a willing part of the process. Partnering with community through volunteer programs, schools and corporate connections is seeing the urban landscape change for the better.
