Global Strategy for Plant Conservation across Botanic Gardens

BGANZ 2025 Abstract

The updated Global Strategy for Plant Conservation (GSPC) was adopted in 2024 as part of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). This global strategy is in its third decade, having started in 2003 as a dedicated, voluntary strategy for botanic gardens to target plant conservation efforts under the UN Convention on Biological Diversity.
Botanic Gardens globally have worked collaboratively to deliver on past targets under the strategy. Substantial efforts have been made to update the strategy to align with the new GBF targets. The new ‘complementary actions’ included in the updated strategy provide a clear line of impact for those contributing to the implementation of the GSPC.
The updated strategy aims to address contemporary challenges and leverage innovative approaches to ensure the conservation of plant diversity worldwide. Key elements of the strategy include revised targets that reflect current biodiversity threats, enhanced frameworks for international collaboration, and the integration of cutting-edge technologies for monitoring and conserving plant species.
The workshop will focus on the implementation of the GSPC in Australia. It will examine how gardens can align with the new strategic direction, with emphasis placed on identifying priority areas, fostering collaboration and cross-sector partnerships, including mobilizing resources to support conservation efforts.
The workshop will ultimately serve as a call to action for botanic gardens in Australia and New Zealand to collaborate and contribute to the global effort in safeguarding plant diversity.
